Oil Painting The Ancient Of Days From William Blake - Buy Hand Painted Oil Reproduction

The Ancient of Days is the title of a design by William Blake originally published as the frontispiece to a 1794 work Europe a Prophecy. It shows a figure the Ancient of Days crouching in a circular design with a cloud-like background. His out-stretched hand holds a compass over the darker void below. As noted in Gilchrist s Life of William Blake the design was a singular favourite with Blake and as one it was always a happiness to him to copy. As such there are many versions of the work extant including one completed for Frederick Tatham only weeks before Blake s death. The British Museum notes that one copy accessioned in 1885 was excluded from Martin Butlin s 1982 catalogue raisonné of Blake s paintings and drawings suggesting the author doubted that attribution.

Oil Painting The Ghost Of A Flea From William Blake - Buy Hand Painted Oil Reproduction

The Ghost of a Flea is a small tempera mixture with gold painting on mahogany type tropical hardwood panel by the English poet painter and printmaker William Blake (1757-1827) held in the Tate Gallery London. Completed between 1819 and 1820 it is part of a series of works depicting Visionary Heads commissioned by the watercolour artist and astrologist John Varley (1788-1842). Fantastic spiritual art was extremely popular in Britain from around 1770 to 1830 and during this time Blake often worked on unearthly supernatural panels to amuse and amaze his friends. At 21.4 cm x 16.2 cm (painting) and 38.2 mm x 32.4 mm x 5.0 mm (frame) the work is a greatly reduced miniature portrait. Blake generally worked on a small scale most of his illuminated pages engravings and many of his paintings are only inches high. Although Ghost of a Flea is one of Blake s smallest works it is monumental in its imagination. In addition its tidy scale creates a drama by contrasting the apparent muscular bulk and power of the creature against its incarnation as an insect in the panel.

Oil Painting Nebuchadnezzar From William Blake - Buy Hand Painted Oil Reproduction

Nebuchadnezzar is a colour monotype print with additions in ink and watercolour portraying the Old Testament Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II by the English poet painter and printmaker William Blake. Taken from the Book of Daniel the legend of Nebuchadnezzar tells of a ruler who through hubris lost his mind and was reduced to animalistic madness and eating grass as oxen . According to the biographer Alexander Gilchrist (1828–1861) in Blake s print the viewer is faced with the mad king crawling like a hunted beast into a den among the rocks his tangled golden beard sweeping the ground his nails like vultures talons and his wild eyes full of sullen terror. The powerful frame is losing semblance of humanity and is bestial in its rough growth of hair reptile in the toad-like markings and spottings of the skin which takes on unnatural hues of green blue and russet. Nebuchadnezzar was part of the so-called Large Colour Prints a series begun in 1795 of twelve 43 cm x 53 cm colour monotype prints of most of which three copies were made. These were painted on millboard after which the board was put through Blake s printing-press with a sheet of dampened paper to make the prints. After they were printed Blake and his wife Catherine added ink and watercolour to the impressions. It existed in four impressions (copies) now in: Tate Britain in London the Museum of Fine Arts Boston the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and a fourth which has been missing since 1887. Blake believed that Nebuchadnezzar was connected to the Christian apocalypse and to his personal view on the stages of human development.
